On backwoods planet Sentinel III, outlaw
bountyhunter Gene Starwind and his friend Jim Hawking run Starwind and Hawking
Enterprises, doing everything from repairing farm equipment to being bodyguards.
But everything changed when they became bodyguards for a mysterious woman.
Before they know it, the duo meet a mysterious girl in a box, space pirates,
alien races, and a high-tech talking ship. They end up in a hunt for the
greatest treasure in the universe, the Galactic Leyline.
Characters
Gene Starwind
Age: 20
Height: 182 cm (5 feet 10 inches)
Weight: 70 kg (154 pounds)
Blood type: O
Gene is the main character of Outlaw Star. He likes shooting stuff and drinking
and runs a small, semi-legitimate business which basically consists of bounty
hunting and taking any kind of odd job for money (provided it's not too
dangerous). His house is a mess. He acts like your basic 20-year-old guy. He has
a deeply rooted phobia of space travel This fear stems from his childhood when
his father forced him into the only escape pod of a burning ship. This makes
things interesting when he winds up going into space. He winds up drinking
heavily in an attempt to keep from getting sick. But he winds up the captain of
the ship "Outlaw Star," which somehow keeps him from feeling confined
and scared. But he's still scared of space.
Jim
Hawking
Age: 11
Height: 140 cm (4 feet 6 inches)
Weight: 32 kg (71 pounds)
Blood type: A
Despite his appearance, Jim is every bit as mature as Gene, maybe more so. (Not
that that's saying much.) He's Gene's partner, and always refers to Gene as 'aniki'
(I've heard that word used for 'brother' and also just for someone who sees
someone else as a mentor--Anime Village translates it as the natural-sounding
'Gene,' instead of an imposed translation like 'mentor' or something). He's
really an excellent mechanic. I'm pretty sure he thinks adults are nuts. He has
an unnatural attraction to his car, I'm afraid; he's named it Ehefrau, which is
German for 'wife.' ; Other than that (and seeing Melfina as a mother figure,
he's pretty normal.
Hilda
Age: 20
Height: 180 cm (5 feet 9 inches)
Weight: 60 kg (132 pounds)
Blood type: AB
Hilda is the one that starts the story off. She disguises herself and demands
Gene and Jim escort her to a farm... Anyway, she has an eyepatch over her left
eye. She's an outlaw, not a pirate. She's the one who gets Jim, Gene, and
Melfina to the Outlaw Star in the first place (she steals it in return for some
money she's owed). She is not pictured in the theme song. Draw conclusions
accordingly.
Melfina
Age: 17-18?
Height: 164 cm (5 feet 4 inches)
Weight: 60 kg (132 pounds)
Blood type: ?
a.k.a. "the chick in a box." Hilda, Gene, and Jim opened a briefcase
supposedly full of something valuable and it turned out to be HER inside,
cryogenically frozen. She's an android, trying to figure out why she was made;
nonetheless, she's a very human android, who can feel emotions, eat, etc. In the
ship Outlaw Star, she takes off all her clothes and gets in a clear cylinder of
gel to serve as navigator. She's still trying to figure out what she is,
exactly.
Aisha
Clanclan
Age: 18
Height: 161 cm (5 feet 3 inches)
Weight: 52 kg (115 pounds)
Blood type: Ctarl B
She used to be Ambassador Plenipotentiary of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire, a very
powerful type of cat people. She is very strong, nearly able to beat Gene, Jim,
and Melfina all put together, and can transform into a super-powerful beast (so
she says, anyway...). She holds a major grudge against Gene and company. She's
broke, but still wants to track them down...
Suzuka
Age: 21
Height: 179 cm (5 feet 9 inches)
Weight: ?
Blood: A
The resident cool assassin/mercenary of the series. She wears Japanese-ish
clothes, and insists on keeping her word and killing her victims when she says
she's going to kill them. Her weapon is a wooden sword (which doesn't get
detected by weapons detectors), but she can cut through walls (not to mention
people) and stuff with it, and can just about beat Gene with it. She tries to
maintain a very cold/stand-offish attitude. In other words, she's very cool.
Gilliam
Gilliam is the Outlaw
Star's onboard computer. It is less than impressed with Gene's piloting skills
(and notes that it fears for its future prospects), which sometimes annoys Gene.
The ship has some devices a little bigger than a can of soda. The devices have
faces and can go around on tracks to 'talk' to crew members, give advice, etc.
Gilliam's kind of the most cynical of the group, which is a little weird (if you
imagine computers of the future as being compliant and faithful).
MacDougal Brothers
Names: Ron MacDougal (the older brother), Harry MacDougal (the younger brother)
SEX: Male
ROLE: Pilots of the El Dorado
The MacDougal Brothers, two of the most ruthless and feared men in space. They
are not Outlaws, but they are not Pirates. They have been known to work for both
Pirates as well as the Space Forces, and once they have completed the job you
offered them, you better watch your back. They have been known to turn their
backs on their employers once they have completed their job. The brothers have
no loyalties to anyone other than to each other. Ron MacDougal the older of the
two brothers was the one who helped destroyed Gene Starwinds fathers ship, when
Gene was a young boy. Gene remembers MacDougals ship, the El Dorado. Harry
MacDougal is not Rons blood brother, Harry is a bio android created in a lab.
Ron loves Harry just like a brother, claiming towards the end of the series that
Harry is the only real family he has ever had. Because Harry was constructed in
a lab he often feels detached from the other humans in the world, feeling
that his differences make him not a part of them.
Fred Luo
Age: 20
Height: 190 cm (6 feet 2 inches)
Weight: 75 kg (165 pounds)
Blood: AB
Fred is basically a gay merchant who's able to get all sorts of illegal weapons
and the like. He's kind of a coward, and is also a very shrewd businessman. He
doesn't let the fact that someone saved his life or that he's in love with
someone cloud his judgment on a deal.
(Note: Cartoon Network had his homosexuality dubbed out.)
Races
Silgrians
One of many spacefaring races that populate the Universe, the Silgrians can be
found on many worlds doing many different jobs. Melfina herself has encountered
Silgrian traders and Silgrian priests (it is of note that the Silgrian religion
is rather depressing).
Ctarl-Ctarl
The Ctarl-Ctarl Empire is vast and powerful. Sporting a powerful military with
advanced technology, the Empire has established itself as a leader in trade.
Ctarl-Ctarl diplomatic vessels are often dispatched throughout the galaxy doing
the will of the Empire, as was the case with former-Ambassador Aisha Clan-Clan.
To a human, the Ctarl-Ctarl seem to be a race of bipedal cats, but that doesn't
adequately describe them. Under normal circumstances, a Ctarl-Ctarl has ten
times the strength of any man, as well as the ability to transform into an even
more powerful form that is all but unstoppable.
The Great One
What appeared to be no more than an Earth Cactus was in fact one of the most
powerful creatures in the galaxy. Bent on galactic domination, the creature
calling itself "the Great One" controlled the minds of those on
Heifong as it tested its own powers ... that is, until it ran into a certain
female bio-android who was decidedly immune to his power.
Saurians
The Saurians are a race of genetically engineered lizardmen, designed to be the
ultimate warrior. It seems that they have gained independence, though, and one
known as Duuz serves with the Angel Links security company. Saurians are
characterized equally by their imposing appearance, great strength, sharp
intellect, hard headedness, and their warrior's pride.
